Nik. Vouvalis

  Nikolaos Vouvalis (1859-1918) was the greatest sponge trader in the world. Together with his wife, known to all Kalymnians as “Vouvalina”, they contributed a lot to the island with deeds that are useful even today.

The “Vouvalis’s Girls’ school (1^st Primary School), the Vouvalis’s Hospital of Kalymnos (today a modern hospital), the Vouvalis’s Professional Shelter (Naval Museum), warehouses with sponges, the small church of Saint Nikolaos and many others.

The residence of the family accommodates the Historical Museum of Kalymnos and some rooms of the house are exhibited, decorated as they used to be. They reveal the wealth that prevailed.
